the immortal life of henrietta lacks by rebecca skloot

henreitta lacks was a black woman
who was diagnosed with a
ruthless case of cervical cancer

this diagnosis was delivered to her
while she sat in john hopkins hospital
on the "side" for "coloured" peoples

her cells were taken
without her consent
and went on to
assist science in numerous achievements
they made the science industry
billions of dollars

as for henrietta's family
they received nothing
they grew up
malnourished
uneducated
abused
without their mother
without a clue
that their mother's cells
were saving other people's lives

illness plagued her children
throughout their entire lives
including elsie
her daughter who
was diagnosed with "idiocracy"
and spent the majority of her life
in an awful institution

even if you do not care about science.
even if hela means nothing to you.
i encourage you to read this book
solely for the blunt race, class and gender intersections
by the turn of the first page
hela will suddenly have a lot of meaning for you

i hope you will give
this memoir a special slot in your hearts
and that you become acquainted with her children
and cousins
and husband
as i did

skloot writes with such beautiful detail and ease
that you will be immediately drawn in.
i promise.

p.s. if you can - please buy this book
profits are going to a scholarship fund for henrietta's grandchildren

disgusted.

my version of the news
can be found at
www.feministing.com
because i get sick of the paranoia
the fear
the victim-blaming

so
i was near speechless
when i saw this

a young woman is drugged at a party
and gang raped
and her peers are laughing it off
saying she asked for it
and circulating pictures

initial reactions.....

1. are these the people that are taking over the world in the near future?
please. say. no.
2. just because she is a woman who drank too much (and was drugged - not by consent) does not ever mean she was asking for it. ever.
3. if that was your mom, sister, cousin, girlfriend, brother, whomever
that was drugged and gang raped in a field
would you feel different?
4. is this really modern day bullying? really?
5. you should be utterly ashamed of yourself for laughing at this situation.
6. this was rape.
7. yes. circulating pornographic materials of minors is a serious offense.
even on facebook.
8. where are your parents? who taught you about sexual relationships? why do you think this is okay?
9. some young woman is broken into a million pieces. because she was raped. and then her experience is being re-lived over and over and over again every time you hit "share" because you think it is a joke. have you been raped?
has someone you know been raped? did you laugh?
10. is it still funny?

friday

the first full week of classes
has come and gone

including:

one (unfair) parking ticket
a broken windshield wiper
from the giver of the (unfair) parking ticket
numerous downpours of rain
random slurs while driving in the downpour
without a working windshield wiper
several fire alarms
one very inconvenient fire alarm
so. many. tissues.
an incredibly red nose.
several naps.
too many wasted attempts at trying to read textbooks
one impossible-to-find classroom
one too many french slip-ups
one pathetic attempt at a film class*
an awesome accomplishment**
an order placed for a fantastic book***
and, finally.
friday.

* i am not a film major.
thus
when you say "screen the film"
im not sure what that means.
i can see other students vigorously taking notes.
so i mimic.
what have i written?

- wearing big shoes.
- dancing around
- no words...?
- some girl stole a baguette
- gaze...?

yes.
these are my actual notes.
and yes.
i dropped the class.

** i am on the board of directors at the women's centre
surrounded by amazing women
some peers, some profs and all friends
my cup runneth over.

*** courtney e martin
you have done something fierce

dear universe

just the other day
on my dearest etsy
i stumbled upon these beautiful
vintage
hot pink
ankle cowboy boots
with tassels
and swooned
and sent out a message to you
saying
please!

two days later
i am perusing the second-hand shop
and lo and behold
the boots!
yes, it is them.
vintage
hot pink
ankle cowboy boots
with tassels
and i swooned
and then i tried them on.

universe,
are you really that cruel?
half a size to small.
i gulped back my tears and retracted my poor foot.
then i pouted.

i figure after that fiasco
you owe me something
maybe lots of somethings...

so dear universe
this is what i want
in my size, please

suspender tights
thanks, in advance

sustainable fashion

okay
i am in love with this book.

and these shoes.

thanking ganesh for the french 101 classes
i am about to endure
if anything
they will ensure i can navigate myself around this website
where these shoes
and i
will become one.

sleeping naked is green

by vanessa farquharson

this fellow canadian
began a very brave journey

1 eco-change for every 365 days of the year

she records these changes
on her blog
www.greenasathistle.com
and, lucky for me,
she has also created a book
which fans, including me, refer to as snig
sleeping naked is green

what i truly admire about this book
is first and foremost
vanessa's sarcastic yet brilliant approach
to environmentalism

i was also tickled that she
brought obsessive purists to the spot light
people who believe that once you declare yourself
an environmentalist
there is no room for slip ups
for uh ohs
for flipping the bird to the sun outside
grabbing yourself a bag of cheetos
throwing them in a plastic bag
driving home and idling outside your house
while you eat them
(perhaps a little excessive but you get it)
indeed, these obsessive purists seemed to have
quite a bit feedback on what they saw as
failed attempts
but any attempt is still an attempt, no?
yes.

i also enjoyed that she was upfront and honest
about money
eco-products are expensive.
organic foods are expensive.
soy clothing is expensive.
as i perused this book i began to wonder
how in the heck is this young woman
living on her own
in a nice lil place
and affording all these green changes?!
and then she comes clean:
she sold her car.
who needs a car when you have a bicycle?

my only beef (sorry, vegan environmentalists!)
is that she was originally
inspired by
al gore.
now, any inspiration
is brilliant
especially considering what vanessa accomplished

but, al gore?
really?
he may have brought some issues to the table
but this table was heavily scaled towards him
throughout his entire documentary
al gore will gain my respect
when he creates a well-rounded and fair documentary
that is more so about the environment
and less so about his life.

all in all
big standing ovation to vanessa
and in response
i will be posting green tips (some mine, some hers!)
on my blog
(shift eyes to the right and voila)
do comment if you have any you want to share
