hamilton

i walked 5 blocks
in a really rough neighbourhood
in shoes that beckon blisters
for my love of vegetables.

it may seem like madness.
but i really, really needed some veg.
i have been travelling for two whole days
and veg food is not so easy to come by
in airports, hotels and surrounding areas.

i maxed out on bread and cheese
and desperately needed food
that had a direct connection to the ground
at some point.

so off i went
to stand in awe at the farmers market
it was amazing.
rows of fresh cheese
french-inspired pastries
flowers
fresh bread
jam and jellies
and my beloved vegetables.

i returned with two very large purple carrots
grown by two very awesome ladies.
an apple*.
some organic lettuce seeds for my garden.
a homemade cinnamon bun
un peu de chevre (a little bit of goat cheese)
and some organic snap pees.
satisfied?
oh yes.

it was utopic, really.
i breezed through this neighbourhood
with utter lightness
for only an hour earlier
i had finished what i came to hamilton to tackle.

i came here for an interview

for the chance to be accepted into
the mcmasters midwifery program

there i stood
with nothing but nerves
and a fabulous vintage belt
chatting with amazing women
who have come from all across globe
to interview as well.

minutes later
we commence
we read quick
think quicker
and bounce around a hallway
to plead our case.

after an hour and twenty minutes of pure chaos.
we are done.
plucked.
gutted.
and exhausted.

results for the interview are pending.
results for the produce? my tummy is totally content and would like some more.
but
my feet think otherwise!
off to nurse my blisters.

en route

i am sitting in the airport with a soy latte and two big bags under my eyes.
thinking 4 am is way to early. under any and all circumstances.
but
totally in love this:

street artists are awesome.
i recently watched exit through the gift shop
and was awed by amazing street artists

this street artist
found an abondoned building
covered it in black boards
gave some chalk
and asked anyone
and everyone
what do you need to do before you die?

such an awesome idea.

what do you need to do before YOU die?
my list is pending....

au·ton·o·my

au·ton·o·my
independence or freedom, as of the will or one's actions: the autonomy of the individual.

how important is it for you to vote?
so important that i honestly could not stress it enough.
this is your community.
and your future.
you have a right to mold your future.
let your voice be heard.

i will not bash certain parties
and praise others
you all have your own ideas
about what is important
and i trust that our generation
can make their own decisions.
and the right decisions for our future.

i do
however
want to stress
the importance of women and women's rights.

in feminist philosophy
the concept of autonomy is crucial.

without autonomy
without the right to make decisions
about our bodies
and our selves
we are not fully human.

if we are not fully human
we are not fully respected in our communities
women will bear the brunt of this every single day
in subtle ways
in obvious ways
in violent ways.

just think about what would happen
if you suppress half your population

do not let half of your community become oppressed.

please vote.

i heart sophie madeleine

p.s. rubber boots are awesome.
p.p.s no one rocks a pencil skirt and white blouse quite like sophie.

i have a sneaking suspicion..

that this would make a fantastic light.
(imagine the patterns that would dance on my walls!)
i desperately need one.

hi!

you should read this.

lovely post about life
and what really matters.

ode to asparagus

i fell in love
with the idea of growing asparagus
ever since i saw this picture

there is just something
about the way it shoots
out of the ground
it looks endearing
and delicious.

rumour has it that it takes
approximately 3 years
of planting asparagus in your garden
before you can get a really solid bed
that will come back every year!

i best find me a slot
and get started!

meanwhile.

here is a recipe that is delicious.
vegan cream of asparagus soup

1 tbsp olive oil
1 bunch asparagus (i used 1.5 as i had some left over from another)
2-3 cloves garlic
half an organic yellow onion
1 rib celery
2 potatoes
4 cups vegetable broth (can do chicken if that is your style)
.5 cup soy milk (can do real milk if that is your style)
salt and pepper
a dash or two dried tarragon
lemon (optional)
goat cheese (optional)

step one

heat olive oil in your favourite soup-making pot. add garlic. wait 2 minutes. add onion and celery. wait 3-4 minutes until the onion softens and you can start to smell the onion and celery.

step two
add asparagus. let is saute with the other veggies and garlic. you may want to put the lid on during this time to keep some steam in for the asparagus to do its thing. wait 3-4 minutes.

step three
add veg broth, soy milk, potatoes and tarragon. bring to a boil. then reduce hit and cook (with the lid on) for approximately 30 minutes or until the potatoes and asparagus have softened.

step four
using a hand blender, blend your soup into a nice thick nutritious soup.

step five
add salt and pepper to taste.

step six
pour yourself a bowl and add lemon to taste. if you are a goats milk fanatic (like moi), add as much goats milk as you see fit.

step seven
enjoy.

for those of you who think the above is too much work..
this is truly yum:

sauteed asparagus with garlic and lemon

1 bunch asparagus
2-3 cloves garlic
1 tbsp olive oil
lemon
salt

step one
heat pan on medium heat. add olive oil. add garlic. wait 1-2 minutes.

step two
add asparagus. put lid on and let it saute for approximately 8 minutes. stir it every once and awhile.

step three
taste test. it should be crunchy yet chewable. add salt and lemon (as much as you want).

step four
enjoy.

p.s. asparagus is one of the most nutrient veggies you can have. it is jammed with vitamins and minerals and even anti-cancer agents. love when food and health combine.

downtime up

i have managed to take my downtime
and turn it up.

what does this mean exactly?

i took my downtime
in which
i brew peach rosemary iced tea
i read books that have no affiliation with my degree
i walk my dog for as long as i want to

there are no time limits during these lulls

i plant
i bake spontaneously
i work a little
i relax lot
you get it, right?

in one crazy month
i turned that upside down

my downtime
is now

up!

in which
i fly east and west
and then west again
and read 3 books (affiliated with my degree)
and spend two weekends away
and acquaint myself with
policies i know nothing about
and write papers
and go to class everyday.

i am not complaining.
i am just sharing.

(right? :) )

ode to lotta jansdotter

i could say words
but i think pictures suffice

and the brilliance herself:

i have several journals
her stencil design dancing up my bedroom wall
gift tags
stickers
sticky notes
and too many library fees
from coveting her books.

i guess i did say some words.
but now you know.
she is amazing.
